About 30 miles east of Santa Fe among pines on a rocky landscape sits the Pecos National Monument. Within it is a preserved Kiva used by ancient tribes for rituals, ceremonies and healing the sick. Here the soothing warmth and profound quiet provided shelter from relentless frigid wind that whipped across the frozen ground above. My hope was to capture its magical essence in a photograph to remember the comfort others must have also enjoyed there so many years ago. -Dan McGeorge
