Artist's Description

Lake Helen, founded in 1888 in central Florida has a beginning somewhat similar to Coronado, California, also established about the same time, and for the same reason. Lake Helen was a beautiful little town with big plans. Developers built beautiful Victorian themed hotels, and it was to become a winter destination for many in the North East. Sadly an extraordinarily harsh winter put an end to its dreams. Like Coronado Lake Helen once had a railroad in the early 20th century, and like Coronados it was paved over, becoming West Ohio Avenue, and can be seen now as a picturesque roadway beneath stately old oak trees. -Dan McGeorge
