Standing tall near the Hotel del Coronado in Southern California is the brick smokestack of a historic electrical plant that represents an interesting window into the past. The hotel opened in 1888, but before it was built an electrical power plant was constructed, the first in California, and the largest of its kind in the world. It's purpose was to provide power for the hotel's construction, as well as the soon to be City of Coronado, and it did so until 1922. History aside, a contemporary view of the now-restored structure towering above the streaking lights of passing traffic provides still another unique perspective of the beautiful Hotel del Coronado. - Dan McGeorge
