The Old Mill
Crystal, Colorado
It was silver that brought miners to Crystal River, Colorado in the late 1800�s. Ambition, hard work, and determination resulted in this amazing structure as a hydraulic-driven air compressor plant to power the tools in nearby mines. When the operation closed in 1917 the building was abandoned, and remains so to this day. Good fortune however, and the caring interest of some individuals and organizations have kept it standing in remarkable condition, and since 1985 it has been a National Historic Site. Awaiting development of the perfect light gave me plenty of time to observe and contemplate the incredible uniqueness of this scene. The rustic beauty of the old weathered mill, nestled perfectly within a rich green forest of aspens and pines was as picture-perfect as it could be.
