Description
Navajo Light
Antelope Canyon, Arizona
Near Page, Arizona, close to Lake Powell and just south of the Utah border a series of slot canyons sit on Navajo Indian Land. Worn by centuries of rushing water these red limestone canyons wind under narrow slot openings that allow momentary beams of sunlight to enter dramatically throughout the day. This particular spot in the upper canyon is an iconic staple for many serious photographers. I was determined to capture my own interpretation and did so with a two-day process of establishing the timing on one day and photographing at the correct moment the next. With the necessary long exposure and a short window of time only one try is possible. The exact moment the shutter is first opened is critical. I waited, watched, then pressed the release. Counting down the seconds I even held my breath knowing the slightest bump or movement would ruin the result. What seemed like forever ended, I closed the shutter and moved on hoping the review of the image would meet my expectations. I smiled. No need to go back next year! -Dan McGeorge
