Master and Commander
San Diego, California

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was filmed in 2003. The movie featured two stars, Russell Crowe and the HMS Surprise, a painstakingly recreated authentic replica of a British battle frigate. I was fortunate to accompany the ship on its maiden voyage with the San Diego Maritime Museum. At one point the ship in full sail passed between my position and the sun. It did so slowly, silhouetted against the brightness. Inching forward its sails began to glow and the wind-chopped waves sparkled. Then, as if on cue, a lone seagull appeared beating its wings against the air as if leading the ship toward further exciting adventures. -Dan McGeorge
