Description
Mackinac Moon
Mackinac Island, MI
It was a perfect October evening. My cousin Joyce had accompanied me to work the shoreline of Mackinac Island at sunset during a trip where she and her husband Bob had been guiding me through Northern Michigan to places of beauty. To my amazement a rare phenomenon was occurring. A partial moon was setting at the same time as the sun, and the light could not have been more perfect. Brightly lit by the sun the moon began to drop behind Round Island Lighthouse (a location in the film "Somewhere in Time") over the Mackinac Straights as twilight approached. A long lens and in-camera double exposure were needed to capture the scene so the moon's relative size to the lighthouse was the same as the eye saw there that evening. The result was a single image which depicted exactly the amazing moment just as nature had created it. -Dan McGeorge
