While strolling along the tops of Londonderry's famous walls I marveled at the sense of history and magnificent beauty of these ancient structures. Built around 1615 to protect the town's inhabitants from marauders they remain the only complete city walls in Ireland, and one of the finest examples in all of Europe. But it was the music that touched my heart. It came, floating lyrically from below. Then, as I passed by the Magazine Gate, I saw them. Street musicians, their coin-filled guitar case laid hopefully before them, playing and singing with the joy and hope that these walls were built so long ago to preserve. Magical. -Dan McGeorge
