Description
The beautifully sweeping curve of the Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego came about by chance. When the Navy agreed to construction of the bridge in the early 60's they stipulated a minimum center height of 200 feet. A proposed straight bridge would have been too short and too steep to meet that height, so a longer curved bridge, 2.1 miles, was designed. Today the bridge speaks for itself, particularly in late evening when reflections of light dance like liquid fireworks across the gently rippling water. -Dan McGeorge
