Detroit Lake, Oregon

The total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 was astounding. It was my first and only total eclipse, and the magic of the moment was far beyond anything a photograph, film, or television show could ever replicate. I had no idea! Overwhelming. This photograph was taken during the moments just preceding the full eclipse for a couple of reasons. One I wanted to capture and convey the overall feeling of the event, and its presence in a natural setting. The other is it is impossible to capture anything but the ring of the sun's rays around the moon at totality. It was sudden, as though there was an enormous power outage, and everything went dark. Virtually every eclipse at this point looks the same, no matter where or when. And it is unbelievable to experience it in person. My first thought was to quickly make the necessary adjustments to zoom in and capture the solitary moon-covered sun. Then I realized I did not want anything to co...
