Description
Ghost of the Monte Carlo
Coronado, CA
Arriving at the shipwreck site of the SS Monte Carlo, the legendary gambling ship which ran aground on this Coronado beach on New Year's Day in 1937, I found a massive horde of curiosity seekers clamoring aboard its remains. My hope for an artistic photograph were dashed, even after waiting a couple of hours for the crowd to die down. Darkness fell, the tide came in, and bit by bit the people left. Except for an undaunted couple still standing on the now submerged wreck. The sky had turned a rich blue, punctuated with a crescent moon. Using a long exposure I captured this scene, and almost as if on cue one of the people scampered back to the beach shortly after I opened the shutter leaving only a faintly transparent apparition of themselves. Perhaps. Or was it really a ghostly visitor from the past, themselves curious over all the excitement? -Dan McGeorge
